where to go / Outjo

Outjo lies on the main route to the Etosha National Park (Okaukuejo restcamp), Kamanjab and Khorixas (the gateway towns to Damaraland and Kaokoland now referred to as the Kunene Region). Outjo is a small border-town between the commercial farmland, Damaraland to the east and Kaokoland in the northwest and from where you can almost touch the Etosha National Park. The indigenous Himba tribe (from the upper Kunene Region) is often spotted in Outjo, where they come to buy essentials or sell their handmade crafts to local businesses. History Tom Lambert, a white trader, established himself here permanently in 1880 and in 1895, a German military unit stationed here, developed Outjo into a small town. The former military buildings have all disappeared, with only a few historical buildings standing, such as the old stone house (Franke house) where a small museum can be visited.
