Pipe Organ Rocks

Pipe Organs

En route to the Burnt Mountains and close to Twyfelfontein, you will find a rock formation referred to as the Organ Pipes. This geological phenomenon, created approximately 120 million yeas ago, was caused when magma far below the earth’s surface surged upwards and by gradual cooling transformed into dolerite. The dolerite contracted and cracked over the many years and the Organ Pipes (some as high as five meters) offer interesting photography.

The sides of the small valley are lined with rows of dolerite columns. The colours of the weathered rock are quite attractive under the correct sunlight conditions. Best time for photographs is mid morning or mid afternoon. If you like geometrical protrusions in rocks or have a thing for organ pipes, this will be just the thing for you.
