I Dream Africa

I Dream Africa

Rundu is the largest town in the Kavango and also in the north eastern region. Western civilisation has not influenced the traditional lifestyle of the Kavango people. You will see huts, children and domestic animals on either side of the national road. The town offers some beautiful river views. The area produces mahangu (millet), cattle, goats and wood carvings. Visit Rundu’s ‘beach’ where you can still see the remains of an old pontoon bridge and the town of Calais, which was thriving during Portuguese colonial rule. The traditional way of fishing can also be observed and experienced at the ‘beach’. During weekends and on public holidays this area turns into a hive of activity. People come to wash vehicles and clothes, to swim and to baptize in the river, to join beer festivals and sporting events or merely relax.
