I Dream Africa

The only legal tender in Namibia is the Namibia Dollar (N$), and the South African Rand (ZAR). The Namibia Dollar is fixed and equal to the  South African Rand, and cannot be used in South Africa.

The limit for import/ export of local currency into or out of Namibia is N$ 50,000.00. Foreign currency import has no restrictions, but must be declared upon arrival in Namibia. The exporting of foreign currency from Namibia is unlimited, provided it has been declared, and does not exceed the amount that was imported, and departure takes place within 12 months.

Foreign currency and traveller's cheques may be used at most establishments, or exchanged at any bank or Bureau de Change. Ensure that you have cash available when visiting remote areas, as many stores will only accept cash (and maybe credit or debit cards).

All major credit cards are accepted in most stores, hotels and restaurants in the large towns. When visiting rural areas, ensure that you have enough cash on hand, since many rural areas do not have credit card facilities. Fuel cannot be purchased with a credit card. Check with your service provider to make sure which services are available to you.

Banking hours in Namibia are 09:00 to 15:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 11:30 on Saturdays.
