Birding

Caprivi Strip
Some of the Okavango's specials are found here, as well as highly unusual species like the rock pratincoles, which frequent the bubbling rapids. Other species you might be lucky enough to spot are the trumpeter hornbill, African skimmer, Schalow's turaco and Pel's fishing owl.

Ichingo is on a lush island between the Chobe and Zambezi rivers, and this is a top bird-watching destination. Some of the Okavango's specials are found here, as well as highly unusual species like the rock pratincoles, which frequent the bubbling rapids

Being on a lush island between the Chobe and Zambezi rivers, Ntwala is a top bird-watching destination. Some of the Okavango's specials are found nearby, as well as highly unusual species like the rock pratincoles, which frequent the bubbling rapids

Southern Namibia
Bagatelle covers a stretch of typical Kalahari dunes. Cape turtle, laughing and Namaqua doves are common; white-quilled korhaan make spectacular displays in breeding season, and the ostriches are always magical. Raptors include the pale chanting goshawks, black-shouldered kites and the occasional rock kestrel. For an exotic touch, peacocks wander around the farmstead's gardens

Central Highlands
The Erongo Mountains are great for keen birders. In and around the lodge many species are common ranging from small sunbirds through to Verreaux's Eagles. On our last visit, sightings included the red-billed and Hartlaub's francolin, rosy-faced lovebird, pale-winged starling, white-tailed shrike – and a lovely sighting of a freckled nightjar nesting. There's a good variety of birds to be seen here, including plenty of raptors

Etosha National Park
Birdlife in Ongava Reserve and neighboring Etosha is prolific. With over 340 species to be seen, amongst them 10 of Namibia's 14 endemic bird species most 'twitchers' will be kept busy here. Local specials include the Namaqua sandgrouse, short-toed rock thrush, acacia pied barbet, double-banded courser and yellow-bellied eremomela.

Skeleton Coast & Kaokoland
Plenty of sea-birds at Terrace Bay, and then lappet-faced vultures from the air. Sightings include red-billed francolins, scimitar-billed wood hoopoe, western red-footed falcon and the endemic Monteiro's hornbill.

Birds seen vary from aquatic species on the perennial waters here, to endemic desert varieties and those that inhabit dense riverine vegetation.

Damaraland
Interesting sightings include the Benguela long-billed lark, Ludwig's bustard, the African hawk-eagle and the tractrac chat

Swakopmund and Walvis Bay
You may find a 'bird paradise' in Walvis Bay's lagoon, that attracts flamingos, Cape pelicans and other migrant water birds

Namib Naukluft National Park
There are resident black eagles and rosy-faced love birds in the area.
