4X4 SELF DRIVE : KAOKOLAND / KAOKOVELD

Located in the far north-west, Kaokoland is one of the particularly untouched regions in Namibia. The almost inaccessible area south of the Kunene River is the home of the Himba ethnic group, who have kept their ethnic individuality and culture in the seclusion of Kaokoland. Travelling through this region is only possible under expedition-like conditions in off-road vehicles and, furthermore, should only be done under the leadership of an experienced guide. Tracks are hardly signposted, corrugated and extremely stony or sandy.

EtoshaOkaukuejo
You travel via Otjiwarongo to the Etosha National Park. You can camp at the Okaukuejo rest camp. Before setting up camp you will have time for a game-drive in the area of Okaukuejo. Later in the evening you can go to the flood-lit waterhole which borders the camp, here you can sit back and relax while the animals come to drink until deep into the night.

Hobatere
Leave Etosha and travel via Outjo and Kamanjab to the Hobatere camp site. Hobatere is home to a vast array of game and birds: elephant, giraffe, Hartmann's mountain zebra, springbok, gemsbok, eland, lion, etc.

Epupa Falls
You leave early in the morning and travel north via Opuwa, where you stock up on fuel etc., to Epupa Falls. Your off road driving abilities of your vehicle and yourself will be tested as you get to the different "obstacles" en-route. You may choose to set up camp on the banks of the Kunene River under the palm trees.

Epupa Falls
Stay at Epupa and visit the Falls and surrounding area, also a visit to a Traditional Himba village is on the program today.

Van Zyl's Pass
You backtrack to Okangwati and head for Otjitanda. The total distance is only 140 km. But you will most probably take most of the day to get there, depending on the road conditions. You can overnight in the wild close to the top of the Van Zyl's Pass.

Van Zyl's Pass
Today you travel down the steep Van Zyl's pass with its beautiful views of the plains and the Marienfluss. You arrive in Otjinhungwe at the Kunene River before nightfall to set up camp on the banks of the Kunene River.

Purros
You leave early to travel south-east through the Marienfluss for about 50 km. You turn south to Purros on the Hoarusib River, where you overnight at the campsite next to the Riverbed. On your travels through the Kaokoveld you will have the time to meet the Famous Himba people and the Herero. The Himba like the Masai of East Africa are probably the most striking looking people in Africa. Especially in the remote areas you are visiting, the Himba women are still dressed in their traditional dress. The Desert Elephant and the Black Rhino roam freely in the areas you travel through, as well as other game species such as the Damara dik-dik, blackfaced impala, gemsbok, etc.

Sesfontein
You continue your safari to the south east to Sesfontein. During the day you travel trough beautiful river beds in search for the dessert elephants and other game species.

Palmwag
Another day traveling through this wild and remote area in search of real wild game. Your route takes you south into Damaraland where you overnight at Palmwag camp site in the heart of Damaraland. It offers: swimming pools, restaurant, bar, etc.

Brandberg
Travel further south to Twyfelfontein. You have ample time to explore the area, you visit the Burnt Mountain the Rock Engravings and the Organ Pipes before continuing to Brandberg where you set up camp.

Windhoek
Your last day of the safari, you head down south-east back to Windhoek.
