4X4 SELF DRIVE : UGABMOND

Exclusive, but ecologically vital, Namibia's Ugab River only flows above ground for a few days each year. The subterranean waters underlying this ephemeral river, however, are shallow enough in places to fill hollows and sustain a wildlife population that includes the rare desert elephant.

The Ugab offers stunning scenery and a choice of where to go as you are not confined to the course of the river.
The seasonal Ugab River originates about halfway between Otavi and Outjo, passes Outjo south of the town, skirts the Brandberg and finally reaches the Atlantic coast about two hundred kilometers north of Swakopmund, where it forms the southern boundary of the Skeleton Coast Park.

Along the way can be seen many uniquely adapted succulent plants such as the desert kohlrabi or elephant’s foot (Adenia pechuelii), which curiously enough is related to the granadilla family. (Passifloraceae).

Lion, elephant and rhino occasionally wander along the river. You can investigate the shell middens and remains of shelters made of whale ribs. These were constructed by Strandlopers, a San tribe who scoured the beaches for flotsam and jetsam originating from the many ships that run aground on this treacherous coast and also utilizing dead seals and fish, mussels and other seafood washed up by the waves.

Travel on the Okahandja B1 road via Omaruru to Uis, where you can re-fuel and continue on your journey, passing the Brandberg where you might choose to overnight.

Your journey will start in a westerly direction, passing the Brandberg, where you can see elephants, springbuck, oryx, ostrich, kudu and baboons. Rumour has it that lions and rhinos were spotted here a while ago. Beautiful scenery can be photographed along the way.

Your last section to Rhino Camp where you can enjoy lunch on the river. From here you can depart back to Windhoek, via Uis or the gravel road from Henties Bay, passing the Spitzkoppe.
