Kaokoveld

Located in the far north-west, Kaokoveld is one of the particularly untouched regions in Namibia. The almost inaccessible area south of the Kunene River is the home of the Himba ethnic group, who have kept their ethnic individuality and culture in the seclusion of Kaokoland. Travelling through this region is only possible under expedition-like conditions in off-road vehicles and, furthermore, should only be done under the leadership of an experienced guide. Tracks are hardly signposted, corrugated and extremely stony or sandy.

Day 1: Windhoek – Lodge
Arrival at Windhoek International Airport, transfer to our offices for your vehicle handover. The rest of the day is at leisure, you have time for some sightseeing and shopping for the coming days. Overnight at the Arebbusch Travel Lodge.

Day 2: EtoshaOkaukuejo
After breakfast at the lodge we travel via Otjiwarongo to the Etosha National Park. We camp at the Okaukuejo rest camp. Before setting up camp we have time for a game-drive in the area of Okaukuejo. Later in the evening we go to the flood-lit waterhole which borders the camp, here you can sit back and relax while the animals come to drink until deep into the night.

Day 3: Hobatere
Today we leave Etosha and travel via Outjo and Kamanjab to the Hobatere camp site. Hobatere is home to a vast array of game and birds: elephant, giraffe, Hartmann's mountain zebra, springbok, gemsbok, eland, lion, etc.

Day 4: Epupa Falls
We leave early in the morning and travel north via Opuwa, where we stock up on fuel etc., to Epupa Falls. We will attend to the off road driving abilities of your vehicle and yourself as and when we get to the different "obstacles" en-route. We set up camp on the banks of the Kunene River under the palm trees.

Day 5: Epupa Falls
Stay at Epupa and visit the Falls and surrounding area, also a visit to a Traditional Himba village is on the program today.

Day 6: Van Zyl's Pass
We backtrack to Okangwati and head for Otjitanda. The total distance is only 140 km. But we will most probably take most of the day to get there, depending on the road conditions. We overnight in the wild close to the top of the Van Zyl's Pass.

Day 7: Van Zyl's Pass
Today we travel down the steep Van Zyl's pass with its beautiful views of the plains and the Marienfluss. We will arrive in Otjinhungwe at the Kunene River before nightfall to set up camp on the banks of the Kunene River.

Day 8: Purros
We leave early to travel south-east through the Marienfluss for about 50 km. We turn south to Purros on the Hoarusib River, where we overnight at the campsite next to the Riverbed. On our travels through the Kaokoveld we will have the time to meet the Famous Himba people and the Herero. The Himba like the Masai of East Africa are probably the most striking looking people in Africa. Especially in the remote areas we are visiting, the Himba women are still dressed in their traditional dress. The Desert Elephant and the Black Rhino roam freely in the areas we travel through, as well as other game species such as the Damara dik-dik, blackfaced impala, gemsbok, etc.

Day 9: Sesfontein
We continue our safari to the south east to Sesfontein. During the day we travel trough beautiful river beds in search for the dessert elephants and other game species.

Day 10: Palmwag
Another day traveling through this wild and remote area in search of real wild game. Our route takes us south into Damaraland where we overnight at Palmwag camp site in the heart of Damaraland. It offers: swimming pools, restaurant, bar, etc.

Day 11: Brandberg
Travel further south to Twyfelfontein. We have ample time to explore the area, we visit the Burnt Mountain the Rock Engravings and the Organ Pipes before continuing to Brandberg where we set up camp.

Day 12: Windhoek
Our last day of the safari, we head down south-east back to Windhoek to return our vehicles before your transfer to the Arebbusch Travel lodge where a farewell dinner is served.
