The Mondesa township in Swakopmund will afford you the chance to experience the "African" side of Swakopmund, with local guides familiar with the area. This tour provides a tour that reflects the history of Mondesa, which was established in the early 1950's to provide housing for the black community working in Swakopmund. The tour lasts for 2-3 hours and the aim is to absorb the visitor in township life and to introduce people to the customs and traditions of the community. A minibus taxi picks you up from your accommodation and with typical African music in the background, this is already the first step in experiencing local life. While driving through Mondesa, you will learn about the history and culture of the township and gain a better understanding of the different cultures living here. You will meet Herero, Damara, Owambo and Nama people. Another highlight is the demonstration of how the locals make mahango and you have the chance to taste some traditional food and drink.
