Situated in eastern Namibia, Gobabis is in the heart of Namibia's cattle farming area. The community is this part of Namibia is so proud of their cattle farming, that a statue of a large bull with the inscription "Welcome to Catlle Country" greets everyone entering the town.
Much alike many other towns in Namibia, the town started when a mission station was built here by Friedrich Eggert in 1856.
The name Gobabis means "place of strife" in the Nama language, and this refers to the wars that were fought between the Herero and Nama people in the area.
Though not on the map as a major tourist attraction, Gobabis is the link between Namibia and Botswana, following the TransKalahari Highway.
Gobabis also borders the Kalahari Desert.
