The Kalahari desert lies to the east of Namibia and was formed by the erosion of soft stone formations and was shaped by the wind into the typical sand ridges. . Typical of the Kalahari are the magnificent red sand dunes, which are formed by a thin layer of red iron oxide that covers each grain of sand. Some areas can enjoy quite a good rainfall and therefore might be covered with grass after such a good season. As there is more vegetation in the Kalahari Desert than in the Namib Desert, a wider variety of fauna occurs here. Some of the wildlife that you might expect to see while visiting the Kalahari are giraffe, hartebeest, springbok, kudu and duiker.
