Namibia’s Caprivi region is situated halfway between the equator and the southern tip of the continent, and midway between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

The region borders on Botswana in the south, Angola and Zambia in the north and Zimbabwe in the east. The Kavango River forms the border to Angola, the Chobe River is the border to Botswana, and the Zambezi River the border to Zambia. Legend has it, that travelers wanting to cross the mighty Zambezi River would look for a rapid on which to launch their rustic craft which carried fire as matches were unknown in those days. At this particular crossing the wind would blow the flames out and so it became knows as Katima Mulilo – ‘putting out fire’.

From the east, Katima Mulilo is the gateway to Namibia. The industrial sector, including a juice factory and wood processing, is growing, and the EPZ (export processing zone) status will enhance further growth. Roads in and around Katima Mulilo have been upgraded. The new Trans-Caprivi Highway is completed. The bridge over the Zambezi River is of great benefit to the whole region.

The heartbeat of the Caprivi lies in Katima Mulilo, the largest town in this region. Katima Mulilo is a hustle-bustle of different languages, markets, small businesses, and curio. After driving on the long stretch of road from Rundu, Katima Mulilo offers a welcome stop to refuel and refresh. Situated along the banks of the great Zambezi River, Katima Mulilo lies on the border of Zambia and is a perfect stop-over for a visit to the Victoria Falls.

Lush vegetation along the banks of the Zambezi are home to many bird species and other wildlife such as the hippopotamus and crocodile. The Caprivi belongs to the tropical climate zone and receives high rainfalls during the rainy season (December to March). This, together with the high temperatures, results in a high humidity factor. Malaria prophylactic is strongly recommended if you're planning on visiting the Caprivi.

The abundance of water in the Caprivi sustains a large variety of animal and bird species. Especially numerous are the elephants, though not easily spotted through the dense vegetation. The wildlife is protected in a couple of reserves (Bwabwata, Mudumu, Lizauli, Mamili). There are no fences, so the animals can roam freely across the borders of the neighboring countries of Botswana and Zambia. The Chobe National Park in Botswana, bordering the Caprivi in the south, is especially excellent for game viewing. Visitors to the area can be excused for feeling that this town feels more like Zambia than Namibia, as it is the country's most remote outpost. It is 1200km from Windhoek, but only half a kilometer from Zambia!
