Keetmanshoop is the "capital city" of Namibia's southern region and was founded in 1860 by the Rhenish Mission Society. Keetmanshoop got its name from industrialist, Johan Keetman, who donated money to the church and as a token of their appreciation, the settlement was named after him.
The town serves the surrounding farming and lodge community and is the last major town in Namibia before leaving the border to South Africa - even though it still is a good 300 km to the border.
Keetmanshoop is surrounded by a couple of attractions, the Fish River Canyon south of Keetmanshoop, being the most popular. Closer to Keetmanshoop you can visit the Naute Dam, Quivertree Forest and Giant's Playground.
