Welcome to Luderitz

Luderitz is situated on the coast of Namibia, bordering the Sperrgebiet National Park. Luderitz was originally named Angra Pequena (Little Bay). Adolf Luderitz landed at Angra Pequena in 1883 and established a trading post - he purchased the land within an 8-km radius of Angra Pequena and in April 1884 this land became part of the territory of the German Empire, marking the beginning of German colonial control in Namibia. When travelling between Luderitz and Aus, you not only have the chance to visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop, you also can spot the Wild Horses of the Namib.

Did You Know?

  • Namibia’s first cinema and the first x-ray station in the Southern Hemisphere was built in Kolmanskop - Kolmanskop now is a ghost town with only memories (and the odd ghost) left from the 40-year diamond rush that the town experienced.
