Welcome to Omaruru

Omaruru is nestled between the Erongo mountains in central Namibia. The name means "bitter milk" in Herero - possibly since a local bush which the cows consumed gave their milk a bitter taste.
The Omaruru River runs through Omaruru and the beautiful Erongo Mountains surrounds the town. Similar to a lot of towns in Namibia - Omaruru started as a mission station. During the violent Herero rebellion, the town was hugely affected and the Franke Tower was errected in 1908 as a watchtower for possible future attacks. Omaruru has now become a hot-spot for artists practicing their skills and little hidden treasures can be found right across town. Be it rootcarving, chocolate making, paper recycling or metal work that interests you, this rather mundane looking town will leave a lasting impression on you.
