OMARURU
Situated 242km from Windhoek, Omaruru is the door to the north-western part of Namibia . All the major features of central Namibia lie within a 200km radius of Omaruru, including the Brandberg, Spitzkoppe, Swakopmund, Usakos, Karibib, Otjimbingwe, Okahandja, Otjiwarongo and the Waterberg Plateau Park. You can also take a beautiful scenic route to the coast, from Omaruru, through the newly acclaimed Erongo Conservancy, which is endeavoring to introduce Rhino back to the area.
History
Omaruru is another one of Namibia’s charming small towns with an interesting history and beautiful large camel thorn trees. Situated to the east of the Erongo Mountains, it was originally inhabited by Damara People. Since 1870, it has been the traditional capital of the Zeraua house of the Herero people, of which a number of important headmen lie buried in the old cemetery in the centre of town. It also has a strong missionary history, with Gottlieb Viehe and Eduard Dannert founding the Omaruru mission in 1870. Due to its central position in the vast hunting ground between the Kuiseb and the Etosha Pan, Omaruru was ideally suited as a replenishment station for hunters and a trading post for traders.
