Otjiwarongo means "The Place where the fat cattle graze" - the name given by the original Herero people that settled here.
During the 1900's, the Germans settled here and in 1906 Otjiwarongo officially became a town. The railway that was built from Swakopmund to the Otavi copper mine was a boost to Otjiwarongo's agricultural development.
The beautiful Waterberg Plateau Park is situated 30 km south from Otjiwarongo. Another popular attraction in the area, is the cheetah protection and rehabilitation projects. Otjiwarongo is the cheetah capital of the world and both Africat and the Cheetah Conservation Fund educate people and assist in conserving these animals.
If your flight arrives early enough during the day and you prefer to immediately start with your journey exploring Namibia, Otjiwarongo is ideally situated about halfway to the Etosha National Park. Lodges surrounding the town provide the perfect ambiance for your first night in Namibia. You still have time to visit a cheetah conservation project the following morning before you continue on your travels.
