Rundu is situated in the Kavango Region and originated as a bus stop for local farm workers. Lying on the banks of the Okavango River, this town is the major town in the Kavango. Namibia's artistic woodcarvers hail from the Kavango. The artworks created can be bought in curio shops and along the roads of Rundu.
The Okavango River is a lifeline to the Kavango people, affording them the chance to fish and do small scale farming for income.
Rundu is en-route to the Mahangu National Park and the Popa Falls. There is a wide range of accommodation available and the lodges on the outskirts of town offer a chance to explore the Okavango River by boat. Cruises are famous for sunsets,hippopotamus and crocodiles. Herds of elephant and buffalo are found along the banks of the river when driving into the the Caprivi Region.
