Solitaire originated when Willem Christoffel van Coller bought 33,000 hectares of land from the South West Administration 1948 - he bought the land to farm with Karakul sheep. His wife named the area Solitaire - a precious, isolated place. Van Coller built the current shop and installed the first petrol pump. The shop also acted as the regional post office where weekly postbags were delivered. Today Solitaire still has the only petrol station, post office and general dealer in the stretch between Sossusvlei and Walvis Bay. When stopping there, be sure to try the famous apple pie - undeniably one of the jewels in our Namib Desert. Attractions in the area include Sossusvlei, Sesriem, the Naukluft mountains and the Kuiseb Canyon.
