Situated in the Namib Desert, you will find a favourite amongst locals and travelers - Sossusvlei. The magnificent dunes, some measuring up to 325 meters when measured from the base, are amongst the highest in the world and this attracts many photographers and nature lovers. Sossusvlei is a large pan where the flow of the Tsauchab River is obstructed by the star-dunes found in the area. Star-dunes form when several winds blow from different directions and this causes the dune to have numerous "arms". In the Hidden Vlei and Dead Vlei, you are able to take fantastic pictures of the contrast between the dead camelthorn trees and the dunes.
It is recommended to visit Sossusvlei at sunrise to avoid the severe heat and for the most beautiful photographic opportunities. The entrance gate opens at sunrise, allowing the visitor an opportunity to experience the colour play of the rising sun against the backdrop of the towering dunes. The most spectacular dunes are found where the Tsauchab River flows into the vlei. In good rainfall seasons, flamingos are drawn to this area
