Welcome to Swakopmund

Swakopmund is situated on the west coast of Namibia and for a lot of locals, it is a holiday favourite. Founded in 1892, the town served as the main harbour in those years.
The small coastal town bustles with activities for both the courageous and tranquil, crafts, restaurants and history. The town has a traditional appeal and wandering through the streets you will not only come across architecture that reminds you of a bygone period but you will also find shops selling the most beautiful souvenirs and artwork.
Strolls on the beach will take you past the aquarium, the jetty, the mole, restaurants and a favourite beach bar. To experience this oasis situated in the desert, we recommend a stay of at least two days. Whether you decide to relax on the beach, in a coffee shop or fill your days with action packed adventure, Swakopmund will leave an impression on you.

Did You Know?

  • Building of the railway between Swakopmund and Windhoek began in 1897 by the Otavi Mining and Railway Company and it was completed in 1902.  Book a trip to Swakopmund on board the Desert Express
  • The ocean that washes onto the shores of Namibia is the Atlantic Ocean – our coast is a barren area of sand dunes and extremely arid. The famous Welwitchia Mirabilis plant is found in the desert and the plant gets all the moisture it needs from the fog generated by the Benguelan current
